Life was not rosy for the star actress while she was a little girl. Her father died when she could barely walk and her mother’s subsequent distant mothering style did not suite her quite well. Her mother remarried but this only worsened the situation for Barbra until she found love in acting. Her mother was scared all along that she wouldn’t succeed in the show business and this was what exactly happened until Barbra added singing to her theatrical resume. The Funny Girl (1968) star actress initially saw her mother’s lack of enthusiasm as a wounding discouragement but as she grew older, she admitted that she worked so hard to prove her mother wrong that fame had no choice but to come to her.

He was married to the love of his life, Diana until he passed away in August 1943 at age 35 just three months after Barbra’s first birthday. Diana Ida Streisand (mother)
Date of Birth: December 10, 1908
Date of Death: March 27, 2002 (aged 93)
Zodiac Sign: Sagittarius
In her generation, it was very typical for ladies to be unpretentious, uncomplicated and aspire only to a life of domesticity. She was this kind of girl and at 20, she met Emmanuel Streisand and in her words, it was love at first sight. The young couple courted on and off again for two years until they got married in 1930. Diana was super content with establishing and maintaining their home life while her husband went out to work. Life was good for both lovers until Emmanuel’s sudden death that plunged his “widow” into a paralyzing state of grief. She now had to hold her family together by taking several odd jobs which resulted in her emotional absence in her daughter’s life.
It was financially relieving for Diana when she remarried but Barbra was bitter because it meant the beginning of emotional abuse. It took years for the Yentl (1983) actress and filmmaker to forgive her mother for allowing her ‘suffer’ in the hands of Louis Kind but she was only too young to understand her mother’s fears. It was this same fears that motivated Diana’s lack of enthusiasm when her daughter showed interest in pursuing a career as an actress. Ida doubted that her daughter was beautiful enough to succeed in show business and also thought that she would inevitably face harsh rejections in her strive for success. Diana came around eventually and turned out to be the biggest supporter her daughter had till she died.
Diana is not just the mother to talented entertainers; she is also a successful singer in her own right. Her father had a beautiful voice which she inherited and passed also to her own daughters. Asides her music career, Diana was involved in a number of charitable causes in New York City Schools. She suffered from Alzheimer’s disease and although she supported her daughter; she was never able to fully comprehend how much of a talent and how accomplished her girl was. Diana died from complications of a home accident at the old age of 93.
